The 2012 Lilly Oncology On Canvas competition is calling for artwork entries. The deadline for entries will be in June 2012, at which time an independent panel of judges—typically comprised of the art director, cancer survivors, oncologists, journalists and patient advocacy group representatives—will select the winners.

What is Lilly’s Oncology on Canvas?

Lilly’s bi-annual Oncology on Canvas art competition and Exhibition provides everyone affected by cancer—those who have been diagnosed with cancer, their healthcare providers, family members, friends and caregivers—the opportunity to express the life-affirming changes that give that journey meaning and to share their cancer journey through art.

Featured at SAMC…

Each year, during the month of September/October, Southeast Alabama Medical Center Foundation displays these pieces of artwork around the hospital to honor those individuals who have been impacted by cancer in some way. Each piece gives insight into the wide range of emotions experienced by those touched by cancer.

The Foundation receives approximately 75 pieces from the national art competition. Each art piece is specifically designed by those diagnosed with cancer, as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers. Launched in 2004, Oncology on Canvas was conceived by Eli Lilly and Company. The tapestry of emotions conveyed in these pieces provides hope and inspiration to others.

Meanwhile, please start thinking about your submission. Remember, you don’t have to be a professional artist or a writer. It’s the sharing of the story that counts. Prizes will consist of donations made to the cancer-related charities of the winners’ choice.

We hope the Lilly Oncology On Canvas Getting Started Videos will inspire you and get you started on creating your entry. Four art techniques are covered: painting, drawing, mixed media and photography. To review the videos and for more information about the competition click here http://www.lillyoncologyoncanvas.com/.

Foundation Funds 34 Projects at SAMC...Southeast Alabama Medical Center Foundation’s annual fall release of funds is already benefitting various healthcare services

Foundation Funds 34 Projects at SAMC

Southeast Alabama Medical Center Foundation’s annual fall release of funds is already benefitting various healthcare services and programs offered to the regional community by Southeast Alabama Medical Center. The $325,000 gift, the largest in the Foundation’s four year history will fund 34 requests from 20 departments, and is expected to positively impact more than 10,000 lives.

Funding for the 2011 allocation was raised during the Foundation’s annual special events and fundraising campaigns, including the SAMC employee campaign. “Almost $70,000 of the Foundation’s total 2011 gift to the hospital was made possible because of the generosity of Medical Center employees,” said Foundation Executive Director Valerie Barnes. Distribution of those funds, she explained, is determined by the Foundation Employee Advisory Board, a 16-member volunteer board of hospital employees.

The largest single source of funding was generated by the Heart & Soul Gala which allowed the Foundation to earmark $96,187 for the hospital’s purchase of six continuous cardiac output monitors for SAMC’s post open heart surgery patients.

Since opening its doors in 2007, Southeast Alabama Medical Center Foundation has raised more than $2.5 million and transferred almost $1 million to the regional referral center it supports. “The dream when we opened our doors in 2007 was to build an organization that would attract the community’s philanthropic interest and one day significantly impact the healthcare of those served by Southeast Alabama Medical Center,” said Barnes, noting the generosity of countless donors is quickly making the dream a reality.

Thank you to all our partners!

The SAMC Foundation’s Healing Hands Program provides patients and their families with a unique opportunity to say thank you to the physician, nurse or other caregiver who enhanced a recent hospital experience.

“Going above and beyond means different things to different people. Maybe it was a kind word, a gentle smile or a warm blanket that brought a patient comfort or reassured a family member. It could have been a lifesaving procedure or a visit from a volunteer during their stay,” explained Sara McCabe, Foundation donor relations specialist.

Two recent Healing Hands honorees were Lisa Bedsole, a clinical coordinator on 4 East and Georgianna Faulk, RN on 3E.

The Southeast Alabama Medical Center Foundation, along with Southeast Alabama Medical Center Living Well Fitness team, is pleased to announce the fourth consecutive year of funding for the Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life Program.

The Southeast Alabama Medical Center Foundation, along with Southeast Alabama Medical Center Living Well Fitness team, is pleased to announce the fourth consecutive year of funding for the Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life Program. Kohl’s representatives presented SAMC Foundation Executive Director Valerie Barnes with a $20,801 check at Highlands Elementary School on Wednesday, October 19 during Zumba Boot Camp Day.

Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life is a childhood obesity prevention initiative provided by Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan City and Houston County Schools. The six week program is taught by licensed nutritionists and exercise specialists and focuses on teaching children healthy eating habits and fun ways to stay active and exercise. The program is taught during physical education classes at each participating school. Children end their six week session with the Zumba Boot Camp Day. Highlands Elementary is the second of six schools participating during the 2011-2012 school year.

Barnes explained the goal of the Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life program is to help children in our local community learn what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. “We’re already hearing of children with cardiovascular problems associated with obesity. This program allows us to not only help the younger generations live healthy but also teach the parents ways to encourage their kids to live healthy through example.” Parents can access additional Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life materials by visiting www.samcfoundation.org.

Since 2008, Kohl’s has donated more than $60,259 to Southeast Alabama Medical Center Foundation.

Kohl’s commitment to Southeast Alabama Medical Center is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares® cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys where 100 percent of net profits benefit children’s health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships like this one. Kohl’s has raised more than $180 million dollars through this merchandise program. In addition to the merchandise program, Kohl’s Cares® features the Kohl’s Cares® Scholarship Program, which last year recognized more than 2,100 young volunteers with a total of $410,000 in scholarships and prizes.

Through Kohl’s Associates in Action volunteer program, more than 385,000 associates have donated more than 1.2 million hours of their time since 2001 and Kohl’s has donated more than $35 million to youth-focused nonprofit organizations. Kohl’s also offers fundraising gift cards for schools and youth-serving organizations. For more information, visit www.Kohls.com/Cares.
