Katherine Patti and Dawn Hazel from the Dothan Kohl’s store present a check to Anthony Eubanks, team leader Living Well Fitness and Valerie Barnes Foundation executive director during a recent Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life class at Cloverdale Elementary School.

“Red,” shouts one child.  “Green,” calls another.  These kids are playing a game, but they are also learning a lesson they will take with them forever – the life lesson of healthy living.  Students at area elementary schools are getting a head start towards a long and healthy life through the Kohl’s Kid Fit for Life, a childhood obesity prevention program funded by Kohl’s and the Kohl’s Cares program.

Lakin Tice and the team from the Southeast Alabama Medical Center’s Living Well Fitness Center, bring the Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life program to area elementary schools once a week for six weeks to teach kids about nutrition, fitness and healthy living.  Hidden Lake Elementary, Girard Elementary, Morris Slingluff Elementary, Houston Academy, Cloverdale Elementary, Grandview Elementary, Faine Elementary and Highlands Elementary are participating in the 2012-2013 program.

Now in its fifth year, Kohl’s has provided more than $123,000 in support of the Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life program.  Kohl’s commitment to Southeast Alabama Medical Center and the Medical Center Foundation is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program.  Plush toys and books may be purchased at the Dothan Kohl’s store, where 100 percent of the net profits supports the Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life program.

Outdoor landscaping at ACOM has been designed not only to be visually appealing, but also to provide a tranquil space for faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Japanese Maples, Red Maples and Live Oaks will be located on the ACOM campus and are available for donor sponsorship for $2,500 each including a recognition plaque. Several benches will also be located on the campus and can be sponsored for $1500 each including a recognition plaque.

The SAMC Foundation recently announced the public phase of an ambitious capital campaign for both SAMC and the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The Foundation is dedicated to philanthropic pursuits that will enhance and sustain quality healthcare and community wellness initiatives throughout our region.

In an effort to address multiple objectives, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees embarked on a $6.6 million dollar capital campaign last fall that included a $4.1 million dollar earmark for ACOM.

Through the early and generous gifts of some 200 individuals and businesses in our community, the Foundation has reached 64% of the goal for the college of medicine.  To date, more than $2.6 million dollars in private funds has been donated in support of ACOM. The funds will be used to enhance the medical training experience and help underwrite new programs that will benefit the future healthcare needs of the community.

Together, we can make history by bringing family doctors back to rural areas, especially ours. Help us return local healthcare to your hometown.
