Have you ever heard someone say, “You are what you eat?”. Well, in a lot of ways this is true. Ok, stop and think…what have you eaten this week? Now think, what have your children eaten this week? Is it healthy or not? Sure, we all live busy lives, but if we are what we eat, and our children are what they eat, then shouldn’t we make sure we’re doing the best we can? There are a lot of ways that we can eat healthy, even when life is busy or the budget is tight. Eating out? Order a salad or a side of vegetables or fruit instead of the fries. In a hurry at home? Make a salad to eat before your meal, or consider making a fruit smoothie for dessert. On the go? Grab an apple and a bottle of water.

No matter how busy we are in life or how tight our budget, making healthy choices is always an option. Sometimes we just have to break one habit at a time as we make improvements. Check out the Kohl’s Kids Fit for Life worksheets for some more tips and ideas on how to eat healthier. Many of our eating poorly habits originate when we are tired, hungry, and in a hurry, so remember to plan ahead.

Foundation Executive Director Valerie Barnes said this year’s event, held Feb. 25 at the Dothan Country Club, was full of excitement and red carpet glamour.

“We are fortunate to have had a very successful event,” Barnes said. “This year’s gala raised $106,730 to support Heart & Vascular program and services provided to our regional community by the Medical Center. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun, and several shared that the Heart & Soul gala is one of the best formal events of the year and they look forward to it attending,” she added.
The black-tie optional event included both a live and silent auction, with more than 74 Foundation friends and patrons donating items for bid. “We couldn’t have done it without 15 very generous sponsors, 235-plus guests, hard-working event volunteers, and the very special businesses and individuals who made generous in-kind donations to our silent and live auctions,” Barnes stressed.

Partners in philanthropy recognized during the event included: Southeast Cardiology, CapSouth Partners; Extendicare Rehabilitation & Health Services; Hearts South, PC; Merrill Lynch Wealth Management Bank of America Corporation; The Pepi Companies; Southeast Cancer Network – Drs.
The Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) is projected to have a statewide economic impact of $34.5 million by the time it opens in 2013, according to an independent study done by a national consulting firm.

The Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) is projected to have a statewide economic impact of $34.5 million by the time it opens in 2013, according to an independent study done by a national consulting firm.

The impact on the state, region and local economy is expected to rise to $81.8 million by 2020 and $116 million by 2030.

Figures were announced Wednesday by the research firm Tripp Umbach, commissioned by the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce to conduct the economic impact study. Tripp Umbach, headquarted in Pittsburgh, Penn., provides economic impact analysis, market research and strategic planning to healthcare organizations and academic health centers nationwide.

The economic impact on Houston County alone will be huge, with the project expected to create 67 jobs by 2013 and nearly 400 by 2030. During that same time period, county tax revenues are estimated at $800,000 by next year and $2.5 million in 18 years.

“Our city, county and the business community recognizes the importance of the healthcare industry, which Tripp Umbach has placed at about $2 billion a year,” said Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce President Matt Parker.

“For so long we have tried to estimate the impact of this sector on our economy. The construction of the college motivated us to look at not only the overall impact, but to have a secondary study on the impact ACOM will have on this area. It’s important to know as we develop our future economy and it helps us identify related areas of growth. This is the highest quality study by a nationally renowned firm.”

Construction began in January on the state’s first osteopathic college and the first in the nation to be developed by a regional not-profit hospital, Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

The16-month construction phase is expected to create 311 jobs and have a statewide impact of $87.4 million, according to the economic impact study.

The intent to build a four-year college was first announced to the public in the spring of 2009 by the Houston County Health Care Authority. The Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) granted the school Pre-Accreditation status in late 2011. A Provisional Accreditation site visit was held in March.

The initial building on the campus will be 110,000 square feet with a construction cost of $40 million. The first class of 150 medical students will arrive on campus in August 2013 and graduate in the spring of 2017.

The college is being constructed on Cowarts Road, two miles east of SAMC.

With 420 beds, SAMC is the largest hospital in the Wiregrass with approximately 300 physicians on the medical staff supported by more than 2,500 hospital employees. The not-for-profit hospital is owned and operated by the Houston County Health Care Authority. As the Tri-State referral center, the hospital’s central location makes it easily accessible to more than 600,000 residents. SAMC has been acknowledged as the only hospital in Alabama to be recognized for six consecutive years in the top five percent nationally for patient safety. SAMC is also the only hospital in Alabama to achieve the HealthGrades 2011 Patient Safety Excellence Award.

Steve Stokes & Jarrod Adkison; St. Jude Medical; Pioneer Telephone Directories; Wells Fargo; Brasfield & Gorrie General Contractors; Lila & Ralph Fillmore; Knology; Regions & Southeast Pain Management Center.
