Champions of Hope 2008

Help us help those who are traveling the breast cancer journey by making plans to attend Champions of Hope on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

Event chairperson and breast cancer survivor Sandi McCool will start this fun-filled day with a 5K Run/Walk that begins and ends in front of the Women's Center. Runners will take their marks at 8 a.m. and walkers will begin strolling at 8:05 a.m. Even the tiniest supporters can contribute by participating in the Kid’s Dash at 9:30 a.m.! After the race, participants may enjoy music, food, drinks, and an opportunity to swap gently loved purses, hats and costume jewelry.

In the United States, breast cancer is the most common cancer occurring in women (excluding cancers of the skin) and is the second most common cause of death from cancer in women. About 1,400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer yearly. We want to lower these statistics and raise awareness about this disease that affects more than 192,000 women each year.

Proceeds from Champions of Hope will help expand cancer services and programs in our community and surrounding region.  In addition to helping support programs that increase awareness and underscore the importance of early detection of breast cancer, proceeds will be used to expand services provided by the Southeast Regional Health Screening Program, a 40-foot mobile medical vehicle equipped with a mammography suite, lab and education area that will provide access to life-saving screenings throughout a multi-county region.

Over a hundred guests witnessed the SAMC Foundation's inaugural Lights of Hope charity event in the lobby of SAMC's Women's Center on Monday, Dec. 3, 2007.

Cancer survivors Curtis Walden (L) and Bobette Downing (R) threw the switches which turned on the memorial Christmas trees at the Lights of Hope fundraiser.

Donors received a stained glass angel as a keepsake and were invited to attend the reception and lighting ceremony.

Dr. Ralph Fillmore, chairman of the Foundation Board, is interviewed for TV by a member of the WTVY News team.

A Tribute to Those We Love
Tree Lighting

The Southeast Alabama Medical Center Foundation invites you to be a light in the life of someone with cancer through our Lights of Hope project. Lights of Hope is a wonderful way to pay tribute to breast cancer or prostate cancer survivors, to honor those who are going through the treatment process, or to memorialize those who have lost the battle.

A tribute gift of $20 or more for a pink or blue holiday light will go a long way to honor your special someone. Not only will you receive a charming stained-glass angel to hang in your window, place in your car, use as an ornament, or give as a gift, but the name of the person you acknowledge will be displayed in a prominent area of the Southeast Alabama Medical Center. You and a guest will also be invited to a festive reception that will culminate in a beautiful twilight tree-lighting ceremony on December 3, 2007 on the front lawn of the Medical Center’s Women's Center.

There are several opportunities to participate in the Lights of Hope project. You may visit one of the Medical Center's gift shops or you may contact a Medical Center Foundation representative at the following events for your convenience:

Lights of Hope will benefit the regional referral center's new Mobile Screening Unit, a 40-foot mobile medical vehicle equipped with a mammography suite, lab area and education area that will travel throughout the seven southeast counties of Alabama administering cancer screenings and other preventive tests free-of-charge for those in need. Proceeds from Lights of Hope will also benefit the MRI Guided Breast Biopsy DynaCad System at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

Be a light in the life of someone with cancer by acknowledge their courage and the fighting spirit within them. Become a partner in philanthropy today!
